Why drink Bulletproof Coffee for breakfast

What’s the best breakfast to increase energy, increase productivity and lose fat?

As an entrepreneur I’m always looking for tips and tricks to hack my health, energy, accelerate performance and productivity.

I’ve been a big fan of the quantified self movement, bio and self-hacking trends. I first discovered this while reading Tim Ferriss’s – The 4-hour work week and then The 4 Hour Body.

A few months ago I discovered Dave Asprey who runs the blog: Bullet Proof Exec. As I delved deeper into what he was up to I saw this Bullet Proof Coffee concoction and I had to try it!

What is it?

It’s an alternative breakfast consisting of:

  • high grade mold-free coffee
  • high quality butter from a grass-fed animal. Food that comes from a grass fed vs grain fed animal is vastly superior nutritionally
  • coconut oil or MCT oil (medium-chain-triglycerides are the dominant ingredient in coconut oil)

Why drink this?

  • You get a 5-6 hour clean, even, burst of energy from high quality good fats
  • It is useful as part of a fat adaptation protocol, signalling your body to look for fat as a fuel source and transition away from a dependency on grains, high carbohydrate and sugar fuel sources which swing energy levels and cravings up and down all day
  • Helps with weight-loss and improves brain function according to the BulletProof Exec
  • Works in well with the Paleo diet and Intermittent fasting, more on why skipping breakfast may be better for you at Lean Gains
  • My experience was that I liked to feel light and not weighed down in the morning digesting a heavy meal, it led to increased productivity something I am always striving for

What do you need to make it?

Monmouth coffee

  • High grade, certified organic coffee – in the UK I recommend Monmouth or the official bulletproof coffee
  • Grass fed butter: Yeo Valley or Kerry Gold (make sure you buy unsalted, I’ve made that mistake!) – 80 grams
  • Refined MCT Oil – 30mls or Extra Virgin Coconut oil
  • Digestive enzymes – to begin with your body isn’t used to processing this amount of fat and will struggle, you may find yourself needing to use the bathroom more often at the start, the digestive enzymes help this transition, eventually you won’t need them
  • An electronic whisk
  • Coffee filter cone
  • Coffee filter papers

 How do you make it?

Follow the instructions in this video:

Have fun and let me know how you get on in the comments!

Update

A number of people have been asking me how to make this in the UK. I recommend Monmouth coffee as my favourite, they don’t sell online, you can buy the official Bulletproof coffee on Amazon in the UK here.

Hi Klaus, I am so excited to be seeing that someone is talking about bulletproof coffee! I came across Dave Asprey’s recipe last year and was trying it for quite a while. I love the that Dave Asprey puts so much emphasis on his coffee is mold free which is believe it or not still a novelty amongst coffee suppliers. Did you use MCT oil or coconut oil? For how long have you been trying it and how do you find it? Thanks

Is the Monmouth coffee mould free? Which one do you use? Have you had Bulletproof coffee and does the Monmouth one taste as good?

Uf you have brain fog put organic coconut oil in your coffee.  It will change your life. I'm not kidding. I don't know if a certain type of coffee will increase your energy level but I use regular coffee and organic coconut oil.

I've followed the idea of having coffee from high placed plantations in South America and I actually prefer slightly salted butter like Kerrygold.

Hello, I buy Bulletproof Coffee but it is super expensive to get sent to the UK. Which coffee do you buy from Monmouth? You have not specified.  Cheers!

Oh ya and that fat adaptation protocol will deliver diminishing gains over time if you do not carbo load / recover in sequence. I can't imagine how dangerous this is for a pale diet, probably much safer for carb cyclers or low fat vegetarians.

This is silly... Your body consumes fat last. The reasons people are fat has a direct correlation to the amount of fat they consume. What do you think this fat shot does to your cholesterol, I would bet this is more dangerous to your heart health than smoking. There is no scientific basis behind any of this bull poopie... Don't be silly

What happens if you suffer from Adrenal fatigue??

I tried this for the first time today (without the butter).  I went and bought some Kerry Gold today.  I read somewhere else that all butter in Europe is grass fed.  Do you know if this is true.

I ask because I am an American living in Germany and this is new information to me.  Thanks for any info you can give me!

Hey Klaus, I am confused on the whole process. Do you buy the coffee beans from Bulletproof Exec, then grind it and do all of this?

@CavemanKlaus I think you everyone who drinks bulletproof coffee has done the salted butter mistake. My sister said "They don't put that much salt in butter anyway" - big mistake it is so gross with salted butter. I recommend everyone give this yummy high-fat coffee a go but follow the rules. cc @bulletproofexec

Thanks for sharing the video.  Have just started to look at the Bulletproof blog yesterday after searching about coconut oil.  Found taking 1 tablespoon in the morning provided a large energy boost and kept me away from breakfast cereals.  Will give the bullet proof coffee ago.  Did you get the MCT in the UK or shipped from the US.  Found powdered from on the myprotein website which I was going to start off with.

Hi Klaus,

I've also found having a black coffee before exercising on an empty stomach to be beneficial. Haven't added in fats yet!

Have you been tempted to get a Bod Pod assessment after reading the 4 Hour Body? I had mine about 6 months ago and found it to be really useful and quite empowering.

All the best, Sam

@MaryBrownSmith Hi MaryBrown Smith, regular coffee can't cut it! its enveloped in the bad stuff, but i do agree with the use of coco oil, which is amazing and has helped me tremendously with my brain fog. I do recommend you look into organic coffees as a standard coffee and then maybe further research into the top notch coffee's like Monmouth and Bulletproof. Good luck!

@coach2 I'd say to try not have the coffee first thing in the morning to begin with as cortisol levels peak at 8am. Try have a bulletproof coffee later in the day and see if you can handle it without adrenal fatigue symptoms. As you attend to your adrenal fatigue and feel it is under control add it as your morning breakfast. The stuff is good :)

@colinwillis Suggest you stay off powdered MCT, I've read (in the book by Bruce Fifie -  Stop Alzheimer) that if an oil is powdered or dehydrated it is oxidised and should never be eaten.

@colinwillis Hi Colin, awesome to hear you are going to give this a crack. I bought the MCT oil off amazon, if you look up the page under "What do you need" I have the link to the product that I used, it works well. Let me know how you get on

@andrewking49 Hi Andrew, thanks so much! I was getting crushed with the VAT. Now to find some high grade Aniracetam in the UK - any ideas?

@CavemanKlaus  @TannerKP Which do you buy from Monmouth? I can't read which are wet processed on their cite but I plan to take a trip to Covent Garden asap and get myself some.

@andrewking49  It is very nice coffee! I have not found better in the UK, yet. It is really good with butter and keeps me going for much longer than regular coffee. Aniracetam is a nootropic that helps you feel sharp and gets rid of brain fog. I got some from Upgraded Self which was great but again the VAT got me. I bought some from http://www.intellimeds.co.uk but they didn't seem the same. Has anyone else had a similar thought?

andrewking49
andrewking49

@TheLeanTimes @andrewking49 I have no idea what that is :) I take it the bulletproof coffee is worth it if you were paying the price to get it from the US. Going to order my first bag tomorrow
