How would you like to wake up excited, full of energy and feeling awesome every day?
This is something I’ve been searching for, for a long time. I want to live a life where I genuinely can’t wait to get out of bed. The ultimate for me is if I can find something I can do everyday that I love doing, feels meaningful and I can make it a business.
Sunday morning this happened to me (and it happened again Monday and Tuesday). I had one of those days, I also had a day where I completely lost track of time and forgot to eat! That also has not happened in forever. How did this happen?
- I had made a commitment to a friend that I would go public by the end of the weekend. I’m a man of my word, my integrity kicked in and the accountability of having told my friend kicked my ass out of bed at 6am
- The more I lay in bed, the more I thought about what I wanted to create, I wanted to make this vision real, I also wanted to paint the best picture of my efforts as I could before I made it public. This was me, this was my reputation, what would people think about my ability to produce? What quality level would people associate with me? This all fired me into action.
- I have a perfectionist mindset and often get myself into a state of perpetual preparation a friend recently told me 80% is better than 0% and it is so true. I am reminded of an awesome lesson my first boss told me when I was new to software development. I was working on a project, it was a personal reimbursements automation system and he asked me how long until it was done, I replied “2 more weeks, I need to add in this, this, polish that…”. He replied that I can spend the next 2 weeks creating a gold star solution or get a silver star solution out today, the accounts department would rather have the benefit of something today even if there are less features and it’s less polished just get it out there and so I did. The other advantage of this approach is I could have wasted time on things which the user of the software didn’t even really care about or was misaligned with what they really wanted, the sooner you get something out there, the sooner you can get real world feedback and you can always tweak and course correct along the way [like I am doing now with this blog].
Here I talk about reminders of the man I want to be and a few tools, tips and tricks I use to keep me on track.
Have a kickass day!
