Today I want to talk about Leadership.
To lead is to take action to cause a result that you desire.
You can lead your life regardless of your circumstances. Leading is a choice. Being a leader is a context to view your world, a place to come from. Leading demands seeing and relating to life as something you create. Leadership doesn’t work when you say things to yourself like “life happens to me”. Leadership doesn’t work when you act like a victim and abdicate responsibility to another person or to circumstances.
To lead demands taking total responsibility. You start to relate to yourself (and others) as “I happen to life, I declare what I want for the future and I take action alone (or with others) to bring this declared future into existence.”
You can lead yourself. You can lead others.
Others will follow if they see something available for themselves in following and participating with you.
Leading starts with why, declaring a purpose, enrolling yourself in this possibility and enrolling others in participating. Now you have a tribe bound by shared purpose.
Human beings are animalistically wired for survival. We innately act to protect, provide and procreate. As we meet people, create relationships, join groups, create groups we do so in order to increase our survival. Being in a group feels good because being around other people makes you stronger.
Simon Sinek has a new book out called ‘Leaders Eat Last’. Here is a video where Simon shares the human animal biochemistry and neuroscience behind how we act as individuals, in groups and in tribes. I urge you to watch the video immediately, it will fundamentally change how you relate to yourself and in groups:
David Logan has a book Tribal Leadership which delves deep into the types and stages of tribes. David is the man behind Culturesync and worked with Tony Hsieh to create and nurture the culture of Zappos, which has been wildly successful and fulfilling for the team and their customers. If you care to create a powerful culture that delivers both happiness and performance, then I urge you to read Tony’s book Delivering Happiness. Here is David’s TED talk on Tribal Leadership:
I’m excited, Simon Sinek is talking in London on February 4th, I applied to win a ticket to see him speak through TechCityNews and won a ticket!!
Here is my winning why:
My why is to create belonging for human beings. To desire is to long for, when you attain what you long for, it belongs to you, thus attainment of desires is integral to creating belonging in one’s life, whether that is people, objects or accomplishments you desire.
I care deeply that we as human beings wake up each day with people in our home, work and play that empower us to be our best, enjoy, relish, grow and thrive at life. I run an agency FuelStory where I work with founders and teams to draw out and connect them with what they truly care about, are talented in and uniquely positioned to deliver. I connect them with who their customer is on the level of their desires, needs, fears and current coping mechanisms such that their value proposition aligns. I run HackHumanity a series of hackathons and workshops to awaken people to what is possible, to meet and form teams of like-minded individuals and to get in action creating meaningful solutions for their own humanity and the humanity of others. I won 3rd place at SeedHack last year with software Triber.io – Quantify & visualise your relationships. The software works to identify who is important to you and keep them a priority. This is currently in development, Triber is a tool for individuals and brands to build, quantify and grow a strong tribe of people for the fulfillment of their mission.
This morning I decided to start freewriting and getting back into sharing video, here is my latest:
This is all great to know and understand, but you may be asking how does this help you? This month with HackHumanity we are focused on Leadership with our event “Leadership Hack”.
The event is for leaders and teams of all shapes and sizes. We will work together with you and your team to clarify your vision, craft stories, design your organisation, processes, structures that build habits that sustain and grow the team.
Get involved at our next campfire event.
Not for you just yet? that’s ok. Below in the comments share with me and the tribe What is your Why? Who is your Who?
Why share? the more you share, the more opportunities you create to connect with others that enable you to fulfill on your dream, with nothing shared there is nothing for others to be inspired by, to relate to you about and to join you in accomplishing. Start with sharing and declaring what you want, this is your access to having the people and the things in your life that fulfill you.
