I made the decision to come out to San Francisco and undertake the 90 day transformation mission September 22nd, this left me 2 weeks to furiously prepare and arrange everything. I don’t think it really sunk in till the second week the enormity of what I had decided; then it was cancelling all my utilities, redirecting mail, going through every item in my house and deciding whether to – throw it out, give to charity, put it in storage or pack with me to take to San Francisco on my mission, in-addition I had to take a guess whether each item would fit in my limited allowance. I got it done! here is me on the day of departure down to 2 items of checked luggage and my hand luggage maxed out with all my electronics!
I kicked things off with 4 days of dancing at a West Coast Swing convention Boogie By the Bay. I’ve been dancing WCS on and off the last 2.5 years, with a bit of a hiatus this last 6 months. I had a fantastic time out here, getting back into the swing of things, dusting the cobwebs off my dancing, catching up with lots of people I’ve not seen for a while and it really renewed my love of the dance and the dance community spirit. I’m inspired now to work on improving my dance and to spend more time social dancing.
Dancing is one of my passions, I love it for the fact no matter what is going on in my life I can always go dancing, enjoy the music, enjoy having fun with the people there, I enjoy making my partner laugh and smile. I look around the dance floor and all you see are smiling faces and people having a great time. It has always been a great escape for me, an amazing source of fun and a place to lift those endorphins!
After the dance event I moved to Foster City (about an hour south of central San Francisco). I’ve been staying here for a week now at my friend Brad’s house while I search for my own room/apartment close to Crossfit which is currently an hour drive each way.
I met Brad while dancing WCS at a US dance convention, he is working to grow his own photography business doing dance conventions and weddings, see www.bradfordwhelan.com for his work, he has a fantastic eye and talent with the camera.
Brad let me borrow his car:
It’s taken a bit to get used to driving on the right side of the road, the left side of the car and learning the US road rules but I’m now pretty decent and making my way around, it actually feels good to be independent again and able to get myself anywhere I need.
Trying to find a room in a shared apartment has proven much harder than I thought. This is mainly due to the nature of my short term stay, the fact I’m not a US citizen and also not working. Most places want proof of income, Social Security number, to submit me to credit checks, previous landlord references, 6-12 month tenancies. I’m searching the sublet section of Craigslist which seems to be a bit more flexible, still not found anything yet, I’ll soldier on! I definitely can’t wait to be living centrally and close to Crossfit as driving an hour each way everyday is not how I want to spend my time here. Coming from London where the population density is so high and the public transport system is amazing, it is a real change to have to drive everywhere, you really need a car, this is a big change for me, I never drove once living in London for 5 years, it was just not necessary to get around as the train and bus system is so good. Here is my efforts thus far to find a place:
I have emailed a ton of listings and quite a bit of back and forth via email, viewed a couple of places, I’m praying I can find something soon!
A short video update from me:
I’ll type up first impressions of http://www.sanfranciscocrossfit.com once I complete the foundations course in a few nights time.
I also have a great post and video about how to cure a cold and cough naturally. Brad and I were both not feeling that great after 4 days at the dance convention of all night dancing with 3-4 hours sleep each night, just need to edit and type this one up, it works so definitely check this one out if you are feeling under the weather.
Update: Found a place near 14th Ave & Balboa which is a 20 minute bike ride to Crossfit, very happy!
